There are many many social networking sites on the internet now (for a list click here) but the most common used in the UK are;
Facebook is by far the most popluar, its ridiculously HUGE and also good fun.To sign up to Facebook you will need an email address and a phone number (phone number for a security check, they text you a code). Once registered, you can search for friends, add applications, create groups and pages.
Myspace is also massive. It is very good for musicians as you can upload your music and even sell it from your page. Its better for personalising your page as you can create many different layout styles etc. Your Myspace will require some basic knowledge of HTML to create really cool pages otherwise your page will remain looking plain and unpersonalised.
Bebo has a similar idea to Facebook but tends to attract the younger crowd.
A cool way to follow your favourite celebrities and connect to friends. Twitter has grown into a real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices.
We could spend forever going on about social networking sites as there's so many. YouTube, Google Groups, Hotmail also have social networking facilities as wherever you can add friends, join groups, follow people and become fans automatically becomes a 'social network'.
Social networking is great for businesses to promote themselves, advertise events, find fans and to create a community around the business. If you own a business then we seriously recommend registering with as many social networking sites as can be managed. However, keeping social networking sites updated with your business news, events etc can prove to be very hard work.
Box Off My Computer offers a social network management service for local people and business who are not too savvy with the internet and creating communities. Or, if you prefer we can teach you how to manage your social networks yourself. Please contact us for more information on this.
